Description

Asacol (mesalamine delayed-release tablets) is prescribed for treating mild to moderate active ulcerative colitis and maintaining remission. This medication works locally in the colon to reduce inflammation.

Take Asacol exactly as prescribed, typically with food. Swallow tablets whole without crushing or chewing. The dosage varies depending on the condition being treated: for active colitis, adults usually take 2.4 grams daily divided into three doses for 6 weeks; for maintenance therapy, 1.6 grams daily in divided doses is recommended. Different formulations are not interchangeable.

Store tablets at room temperature in a tightly closed container, protected from moisture and light. Desiccant packets may help maintain stability. Keep out of children's reach and properly dispose of expired medication.

Common side effects include abdominal pain, diarrhea, and headache. Serious but rare reactions may include mesalamine-induced acute intolerance syndrome (with symptoms like severe cramps and bloody diarrhea), kidney problems, or allergic reactions. Patients with salicylate sensitivity or pyloric stenosis should use caution.

Regular monitoring is important to assess treatment effectiveness and check for adverse effects. Avoid antacids with certain formulations and inform your doctor about all other medications being taken. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience severe abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, fever, or rash.

In case of overdose symptoms like severe diarrhea, confusion, or breathing difficulties, seek emergency medical attention immediately. Do not stop treatment abruptly without consulting your doctor.
