Description
Acivir eye ointment is an antiviral medication containing aciclovir, primarily used to treat:
- Eye infections caused by herpes simplex virus
- Cold sores around the mouth and lips (off-label use)
Mechanism of Action
- Inhibits viral DNA replication
- Prevents the herpes simplex virus from multiplying
- Converts to active form (acyclovir monophosphate) in infected cells
Application Guidelines
- For ophthalmic use only
- Wash hands before application
- Apply a small amount to the affected eye area
- Use approximately 5 times daily or as directed
- Avoid contact with unaffected areas
- Allow proper absorption (do not rinse)
Important Considerations
- Timing with other eye medications:
- Apply at least 15 minutes after eye drops
- Use drops before ointment
