Description

Acivir is an antiviral medication effective against:

  • Herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections of skin and mucous membranes
  • Herpes zoster (shingles) infections
  • Initial and recurrent genital herpes outbreaks
  • Varicella (chickenpox) infections
  • Prophylaxis and treatment in immunocompromised patients (including HIV/AIDS)
  • Post-bone marrow transplantation cases

Dosage and Administration

  • Begin treatment at first symptom appearance (tingling, blistering)
  • Take with a full glass of water; maintain adequate hydration
  • May be taken with or without food (food may reduce stomach upset)
  • Complete full prescribed course, even if symptoms improve earlier
  • For missed doses: take when remembered unless close to next dose
  • Keep lesions clean, dry, and protected from irritation

Important Safety Information Contraindications:

  • Hypersensitivity to acyclovir or valacyclovir
  • Severe renal impairment (requires dose adjustment)

Precautions:

  • Renal function monitoring required
  • Maintain proper hydration during treatment
  • Increased photosensitivity risk (use sun protection)
