Description
Cytotec (Misoprostol) is a prostaglandin analog used to prevent stomach ulcers in patients taking NSAIDs (aspirin, ibuprofen, etc.). It protects the stomach lining by replacing natural prostaglandins that NSAIDs deplete. Effects begin within 30 minutes and last up to 3 hours.
Dosage & Administration
- Standard dose: 200 mcg (0.2 mg) 3-4 times daily with meals (including before bedtime).
- If poorly tolerated: Reduce to 100 mcg (0.1 mg) per dose.
- Take with food to minimize diarrhea risk.
- Avoid magnesium antacids (may worsen diarrhea).
Precautions
- High risk of diarrhea—use cautiously in patients with:
- Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
- Dehydration susceptibility
- Not for:
- Pregnant women (risk of miscarriage, birth defects)
- Breastfeeding mothers
- Patients under 18 years old
- Severe kidney impairment
