Description & Indications
Tadalafil (Cialis) is used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) by relaxing muscles and improving blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation. It does not prevent pregnancy or protect against sexually transmitted infections.
Dosage & Administration
- Take as prescribed, usually 30–60 minutes before sexual activity.
- Swallow with water; may be taken with or without food (avoid high-fat meals as they delay effect).
- Do not exceed one dose per 24 hours.
- Seek immediate medical help if an erection lasts more than 4 hours (risk of permanent damage).
Contraindications & Warnings
- Do NOT take with nitrates (e.g., nitroglycerin, isosorbide) or recreational poppers—life-threatening drop in blood pressure may occur.
- Use caution if you have:
- Heart disease, recent heart attack/stroke (within 6 months), angina, high/low blood pressure.
- Liver/kidney disease, blood disorders (e.g., sickle cell anemia), bleeding problems, retinitis pigmentosa, penile deformities (e.g., Peyronie's disease).
- Diabetes, high cholesterol, or smoking (increased risk of sudden vision loss).
- Not for women or children, but no known harm to unborn babies. Consult a doctor if pregnant/breastfeeding.
Side Effects
- Serious (seek emergency care):
- Sudden vision loss, chest/jaw pain, irregular heartbeat, fainting, painful/prolonged erection (>4 hours).
- Allergic reactions (swelling, difficulty breathing).
- Common (temporary): Headache, flushing, stuffy nose, upset stomach, back pain.
Interactions
- Avoid:
- Alpha-blockers (e.g., doxazosin), antifungals (e.g., ketoconazole), HIV medications, rifampin.
- Grapefruit/grapefruit juice (may increase side effects).
- Other ED drugs (e.g., sildenafil, vardenafil) unless approved by a doctor.
Overdose & Storage
- Symptoms: Severe dizziness, chest pain, fainting. Seek emergency help.
- Store at room temperature, away from moisture/heat.
Additional Notes
- Alcohol may worsen dizziness.
- Older adults (65+) may require lower doses.
- Do not use if advised to avoid sexual activity for health reasons.
